Alec has welcomed today’s news that the electrification of the TransPennine rail route that runs from Newcastle to Liverpool through Elmet & Rothwell will resume with immediate effect under a plan announced by Network Rail and Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin.
More than 400 people lose their lives to drowning each year: over 60% of them children. Following the tragic death of Megan Roger from Wetherby, Alec has been working with the RLSS UK, the UK’s leading Drowning Prevention Charity, to raise awareness of this vital issue.
Alec organised a nation-leading Dementia Summit in January, bringing together clinicians, care providers and volunteer leaders to help him make Elmet & Rothwell the UK’s first Dementia Friendly constituency.
Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne, visited Elmet & Rothwell in July and welcomed the news that 1.8 million new apprenticeships have been delivered since the last election.
Before his election in 2010, Alec said his priority as Elmet & Rothwell’s MP would be “jobs, jobs, jobs”.
Four years on and employment is at a record high. The unemployed claimant count in Elmet & Rothwell fell to just 1.5% in June – down 803 from April 2010.
